Understanding the Rudiments of Texas Holdem

Right now, poker is perhaps one of the most popular hobbies for people of all ages. And of all poker versions, Texas Holdem is perhaps one of the most popular. This article shall help you understand the rudiments of Texas Holdem so that you’ll be able to play Texas Holdem like a true rounder – that means expert, by the way, in poker slang.

But back to our topic: the first thing you have to understand about Texas Holdem is that unlike ordinary poker, Texas Holdem can be played by more than four players. Texas Holdem tables can be filled with up to ten players. Hence, mathematically speaking, it’s harder to win at Texas Holdem compared to other poker versions. But that’s okay because Texas Holdem, on the other hand, provides more fun and entertainment for many players than any other version.

A good rule of thumb in Texas Holdem is to remember that it is a seven card game so if you don’t seem to have any chance of winning when the flop is revealed, you must consider surrendering your cards or folding.

Now that we’re clear about your “chances” at winning in Texas Holdem, it’s time to proceed with the rules. The dealer always has to shuffle cards before dealing them to the other players. The guy to his left would post the small blind. The guy to the left of the player who posted the small blind is assigned to post the big blind. After that, the pre-flop betting round of Texas Holdem is initiated by the player to the left of the one who posted the big blind.

At this round, you haven’t seen the flop yet and all you can see are your pocket cards. Texas Holdem rules allow you to fold this early if you don’t think your cards would amount to anything.

For each round of Texas Holdem, players are asked if they want to check, raise or fold.

When the flop is exposed and your pocket cards still don’t seem promising, Texas Holdem experts advise that this is a good time to start considering whether you want to cut back your losses and just fold.

After the flop comes the turn and after that would be the river. There are now 5 cards facing up at the Texas Holdem table and one last round of betting is initiated. Naturally, the one with the best Texas Holdem hand wins the game and kills the pot!

After that, you start over once more. Easy, isn’t it? So start playing!
